My parents used to say that first impressions are important! They were right! Whether you are meeting a potential 'new' friend, interviewing for a new job, throwing a party or trying to sell your home... first impressions are HUGE! Let's talk about home and the impression we send from the curb.
CURB APPEAL Realtors will tell you that the appearance of your front yard can entice buyers to take a look at your home. If you don't appeal to them from the curb, you will fail to get them in the door!
If your goal is to welcome friends, family (or even potential buyers) then maybe it's time to take a good look at the front door and the surrounding area. To keep things simple, let's look at it from a 'sellers' viewpoint. The same principles apply to homeowners that are staying put and trying to revamp their curb appeal.
Enjoy the photos that follow. Our hope is that you will find something that ignites your interest.
Feel free to borrow and duplicate the look you love!
The front door will be the first place that visitors will stop and stare. These few moments in which people are forced to wait prior to entering your home are critical. At this point, they are already forming an opinion and receiving a powerful first impression of your home. You never get a second chance to make a first impression!
- Scrub clean the entire area. Pressure wash if necessary or use a hose, broom and mop to clean siding, brick and the stoop.
- Clean windows, inside and out. Replace blinds & window coverings if they are faded or damaged as they show from the outside, too.
- Put a fresh coat of paint or stain on the door itself and be certain surrounding trim is also freshly painted.
- Place a brand new floor mat or rug in front of the door.
- Add a pot or two of seasonal flowers. Be careful not to obstruct the entrance!
- Open the door and listen for any squeaks and check for smooth operation. Repair and lubricate hinges if needed.
- Polish the door hardware or install new hardware if the old finish is damaged.
- Add a kick plate if it matches the style of the door.
- Check & sweep off your front entry regularly. Make sure it is free of flyers, newspapers or any other debris.
- Get a second opinion. Ask a friend (with a creative bent) for their advice. Choose someone who has a great front entry and they will most likely be honored to help you with yours!
May you be inspired to make a great impression
with your curb appeal! Add a touch of your personality to the front entrance and entice all who enter to feel welcome!
